Q: Can I apply if I am going to graduate from college this year?
A: No. If you will graduate before the internships start, you are not eligible.
Q: Can I apply if I am a high school student?
A: In general, no. The only exception:High school graduates who have been accepted at an undergraduate institution that is hosting an REU Site, but who have not yet started their undergraduate study, are eligible to participate.
Q: Can I take courses while doing my internship?
A: No. Per guidance from NSF, no coursework is permitted during the period of the internship.
Q: Can I apply if I am not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident?
A: No. NSF requires interns to be U.S. persons.
Q: Can I opt out of staying on campus? I am from the area and would like to commute from home.
A: In general, no. This is a residential program, and living with your cohort is part of the experience. Only for special circumstances (e.g., you are a parent caring for a dependent child), can we waive this requirement.
