AP Credit and Credit by Examination

Students scoring a 4 or 5 on the Computer Science Advanced Placement Exam receive credit for CSE 001 (2 credits) and CSE 002 (2 credits) and are eligible to take CSE 017, the next course in the computer-science sequence.

Students scoring a 4 or 5 on the AP Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) will receive credits for CSE 012 (3 credits).

The department offers two anticipatory exams to first-year students prior to the start of classes in August each year:

  • Placement into CSE 017: first-year students passing this exam receive credit for CSE 001 (2 credits) and CSE 002 (2 credits) and are eligible to take CSE 017, the next course in the computer-science sequence
  • Placement into CSE 109: this exam is open to first-year students who have AP credit for CSE 001 and CSE 002.  First-year students passing this exam receive credit also for CSE 017 (3 credits) and are eligible to take CSE 109 and/or any other course having a prerequisite of CSE 017.
