CIMEL multimedia development conventions

This document is an introduction to CIMEL Development, intended to introduce readers to the CIMEL methodology and content structure.

1. Displayed text font conventions:

2. Content screen size is 587.6 px (width) x 500.4 px (height). Develop all Flash movies this size.

3. Break up screens into small units. Each screen will have a name, the last three parts of which should be a number. For example, the first screen showing the introduction can have a name like "Introduction_01". This number can be in an interval of 10s and must correspond to the screen numbers of the corresponding script.

4. Graphics images must be created in .gif or .jpg format.

5. Use different persona (professor, reference librarian, teaching assistant, other student) to convey different types of messages. Arrange for recording of sounds with the appropriate narration talent. Use a high quality microphone, such as the boom microphone in PL104.

6. Sound files must be created in .mp3 format (sample rate: 22050; channels: mono; resolution: 8 bit).

7. Use Cool Edit 2000 to record mp3 sounds. Each sound file begins with its screen number, followed by the first salient words in the voice-over script, e.g., "600_EthicalDecisions.mp3," where "600" is the screen number a screen in a chapter script, and "Ethical Decisions" are the first salient words in this narration (the script for this voiceover begins "Ethical decisions...."). Upload sound files to a folder like /Cimel/Sounds/chap15/prof, where /Cimel/Sounds is a folder on the CIMEL development server in PL104 and chap15 is a folder for chapter numbers, and prof is where the voice-overs for the professor role go.

8. Use Swish to produce animated text effects. But don't overdo it!

9. Use CIMEL templates or exemplars wherever possible to design new contents in Flash. These help maintain consistency while programming in Flash. Here's the original list of Templates designed and proposed to be used in CIMEL project:

Templates and exemplars are found in /Cimel/Flash Exemplars and Templates on the Cimel server. (Some of these may need to be updated.)

Storing files:
1. Flash movies: store completed fla files in a chapter folder under /Cimel/Flash Movies.
2. Shockwave movies: store completed swf files in a chapter folder under /Cimel/wwwroot/movies/ (and asked the CIMEL administrator to copy them to the "min" web server).
3. Maintain an internal directory structure (in library) inside flash while storing files:

a) Put sound files in folders corresponding to chapter/mp3.
b) Put image files in folders corresponding to chapter/graphics.
c) Put "just the facts" html files in folders corresponding to chapter/facts.
d) Put swish files in folders corresponding to chapter/swish.

4. Persona Images: the current personae images are available in /Cimel/Flash Libraries. The original images are available in /Cimel/Personae.
