Abstract
Although most users develop their own distinctive and often
idiosyncratic modes of interaction with a command-line shell, for any
particular user the interactions often reflect many
underlying patterns. This paper describes ongoing work on
developing a personal assistant for UNIX that learns to recognize such
systematic patterns of use and makes them available to the user. In
particular, we propose an extension to the UNIX shell
tcsh that learns to predict a user's next command based on the
user's past history of interactions with the shell.
